UNHCR: Sudan is now the world's largest displacement crisis

More than 10 million people have been forced from their homes since April 2023. UNHCR teams are registering new arrivals daily in Chad, South Sudan, and Egypt.

The UN Refugee Agency confirms Sudan has become the largest displacement emergency on record, surpassing Syria and Ukraine. Over 10 million people are displaced inside Sudan; more than 2 million have crossed into neighbouring countries.

UNHCR's operation in eastern Chad — where an estimated 700,000 Sudanese refugees now live — is running biometric registration, emergency shelter distribution, and cash assistance to the most vulnerable families.

The agency's 2026 Sudan appeal is currently one of the most underfunded in the humanitarian system. Every unrestricted gift routed through UNHCR partners on Reach Out is directed to this response.
