UNICEF vaccinates 3.4 million children against measles in DR Congo

A three-week campaign across 12 provinces reached children under five in some of the country's hardest-to-access communities.

UNICEF and the Congolese Ministry of Health completed a nationwide measles vaccination round covering 3.4 million children under five, following an outbreak that killed more than 6,000 children in 2024.

Teams travelled by motorcycle, dugout canoe, and on foot to reach remote villages in Équateur, Sankuru, and Kasaï provinces. Every vaccine was cold-chain tracked from the port of Matadi to the child's arm.

"For every child" is not a slogan when the last mile is a river you cross with a solar cool-box on your back.
