WHO coordinates cholera response across seven African countries

The World Health Organization has shipped 4.6 million oral cholera vaccine doses since January to contain outbreaks in the Horn of Africa and Southern Africa.

WHO's Global Task Force on Cholera Control has coordinated 4.6 million doses of oral cholera vaccine to Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Mozambique, Malawi, and Zambia in the first half of 2026.

The vaccine โ€” administered in two drops on the tongue โ€” provides roughly two years of protection and has cut cholera mortality in previous outbreaks by 90%.

WHO also supports national ministries with case management protocols, laboratory diagnostics, and rehydration point setup.
